Aspen airport picks federal grants

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN – The Aspen-Pitkin County Airport recently received a $519,692 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration and another check, for $647,224, is expected this week, according to Dave Ulane, assistant airport director.

The smaller sum is the final piece of federal funding the airport expects to receive this year for its master plan update. The larger check will go toward the environmental assessment that is currently under way for the airport’s proposed runway extension.

All of the monies are part of what the local airport receives in federal grants annually, based on the number of airline passengers who use the facility.

In all, the airport will receive slightly more than $1 million from the FAA for the $1,056,082 environmental assessment; the airport will pick up the remaining 5 percent of the cost.

The feds are also paying $1.2 million toward the master plan, with the airport paying the remaining 5 percent of the $1.35 million contract.

Both the environmental assessment and master plan are expected to be finished next spring, Ulane said.

The master plan will look at potential development on the airport’s west side (the Owl Creek Road side), where there has been interest in locating a second fixed-base operator to serve the airport, he said.
