ASPEN – Jim Elwood, longtime aviation director at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport, is one of three finalists for an airport director position in the Pacific Northwest, the county announced Thursday.

Elwood, director of the Aspen airport since November 2001, is being considered for an airport director post in Spokane, Wash.

“I have truly enjoyed the challenges and initiatives that I’ve been a part of in Aspen, and the opportunity in Spokane would provide me an opportunity to further develop the professional skills and abilities I’ve gained while at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport,” Elwood said in a prepared statement.

He cited the 2004 adoption of the local airport’s first master plan in 20 years, resolving the planned runway extension and serving as chairman of the American Association of Airport Executives as highlights of his tenure in Pitkin County. In the latter role, he testified before Congress on small-airport issues.

Elwood has been an executive in airports for the past 22 years. Prior to coming to Aspen, he was director of the Eagle County Regional Airport in Eagle.

He heads to Spokane in early February for interviews.

“In the meantime I will continue my work and passion for our airport,” Elwood said in the statement.
