Art of the deal

Dear Editor:

In Stewart Oksenhorn’s recent article about local art dealer Darren Quintenz, the claim was made that his gallery “represents” the renowned Guatemalan photographer Luis Gonzalez Palma (“Aspen gallerist Darren Quintenz’s expanding view of art,” March 9, The Aspen Times).

A gallerist can own work by an artist purchased on the secondary market and make it available for sale, but only one gallery can be the local representative of an artist and receive new work on consignment directly from the artist, and that gallery here in Aspen is the Joel Soroka Gallery. We have “represented” Luis Gonzalez Palma in Aspen since 1993 and continue to do so and currently have a small exhibit of the artist’s work including several recent pieces.
