Art Museum benefit

Mary Eshbaugh Hayes

Every holiday season the Aspen Art Museum holds a big benefit at the St. Regis hotel. The event includes a cocktail party, silent auction, live auction and style show. Featured on the runway were the fur coats and evening gowns of Dennis Basso, so the party is called the Dennis Basso Freestyle. Roxanne Bank, marketing director at the museum, reports that the Art Museum made the most ever this year, pushing over $500,000. More than 600 people attended and $337,000 was made just on the silent and live auctions. This was the outstanding benefit in Aspen this season.

The Dennis Basso Freestyle was produced by Susan Burston, who works at the museum. However, Susan has now resigned after seven years at the museum as director of development and events producer. Susan will now do private consulting on special events, public relations and promotions.

Because there were so many people there to photograph, I will just feature photos in the column this week.Undercurrent … However, I want to comment on this holiday season in Aspen. I felt a loss of tradition. The Elli of Aspen building, which was painted “Bayer Blue” since the early 1950s when Elli Iselin and Herbert Bayer decided that was THE color, is now painted a dark charcoal gray. And I was disappointed by out-of-towners, newcomers and locals who did not respect the holiday traditions of the town … Don’t they realize that the holiday galas are the major fund-raisers for some of the Aspen nonprofits?
