Arrests down in Pitkin County

PITKIN COUNTY ” The number of arrests attributed to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office dropped about 30 percent in 2008, when compared with the same period a year earlier, according to crime statistics released Wednesday.

A total of 140 arrests were made last year, down from 198 in 2007. Meanwhile the total calls for service rose to 17,743 from 17,017 in the same year-to-year period.

Total crimes against people rose slightly to 105 in 2008 from 103 in 2007. The category includes assaults, disorderly conduct and sexual assaults. Of note, the number of sexual assaults went unchanged ” there were eight in each year.

Property crimes sank to 201 last year from 237 in 2007. That category includes burglary, theft and trespassing.

Driving under the influence offenses dropped to 39 from 50, while property and injury accidents climbed to 182 from 175. However, traffic citations slumped to 450 in 2008 from 510 in 2007.

Juvenile incidents were up slightly to six from five. Those incidents were defined as alcohol consumption and possession.
