Around Aspen: Thrift Shop

The ladies of the Aspen Thrift Shop held their annual Christmas party in December at the Hotel Jerome. Christina Patterson, president of the Thrift Shop, said they made more than $416,000 this past year.

“We are making so much more with our new building. We have much more inventory and more tourists are discovering us. We are having such big Saturdays that we have to have a full staff … a few volunteers can’t handle it.”

The ladies are not still paying for the new building; it was all paid for with $2.5 million raised mainly from the community, along with some money raised by the shop.

“So we are back to our original premise – giving everything we make away,” said Patterson.

Just some of the local groups receiving funds from the Thrift Shop are Hospice, the Red Brick Arts Center, the Veterans Project, Response, Pathfinders, the Early Childhood Center and the Aspen Recreation Center.

The Thrift Shop ladies are all volunteers and all the merchandise is donated. The group holds two recruiting parties a year and Patterson said “it’s amazing how many volunteers come forward.”

Undercurrent … I always get comments on my “Undercurrent” but have received an unusual number about my mention of the icy pathway leading down from Clark’s Market to the Post Office. Many people told me they have either fallen there, almost fallen there, or seen someone fall there.
