MEHOrganizers of the Les Dames d'Aspen Gala are, left to right: Trustee Leinar Drake, Les Dames President Christine Aubale Gerschel and vice-president Bridget Badon.

For 26 years Les Dames d’Aspen has been raising funds for local arts organizations. This year they held a gala dinner and dance at the Hotel Jerome to celebrate the membership. The group usually raises over 100,000 of which 80 percent goes to Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, four scholarships of $2,000 each to art students in the Aspen/Basalt Schools, and the remaining funds divided between the Aspen Writers Foundation and Theatre Aspen. Over the years Les Dames have raised over $2.6 million for the arts. To raise funds, at first Les Dames held big dances either at the height of summer and for many years on New Years Eve. Due to changing times, for the past several years the funds for the arts have been raised by memberships in Les Dames which are $1,200 a year. Also, due to changing times, the organization has changed. It is now much more social with events held every week during the busy seasons of summer and winter. Events include hikes, ski days, wine tastings, bicycling, luncheons, and golfing. Newcomers have found that Les Dames offers excellent chances to meet people and to get involved in Aspen.
