Around Aspen: Class of 1981

The Aspen High School Class of 1981 held its 30th reunion on Sept. 30, 2011. There were 46 classmates attending plus many friends from other classes.

Faculty who attended were former midde school principal Dick ‘Rocky’ Hansen, high school prinicpal Barbara Pitchford, high school coach Danny Poole, gym teacher Ruth Harrison, and teachers Terry Orcutt, Kay Simons, Gary Kreutzer, Dave Connaroe, Jan Cochoran and Mike Flynn. Because she also graduated with that class in 1981, my daughter, Jess Bates was in attendance and took the photos at the picnic.

At recent Farmers Markets saw former Aspen Times reporters Chris Pytel who now is a technical writer in Denver, and Gil Radowsky, who does PR for several companies in the Denver area.

Had an email from longtime former resident Dutch Hodges who is with the Peace Corps in Kenya, Africa. She writes that her Peace Corps job is pretty great working with ECO ETHICS, marine conservation organization. She works with the board members, writes ecology and fisheries grants, and does other office procedures and marketing. She says things in Kenya take forever … lack of wifi, electricity at times, no FAX machine, pens don’t work. Even though she is back from bush training of three months and bucket baths, the work enviornment is a challenge.

Undercurrent … So many people are saying the same thing: “The snow stayed too long (into June) and it is back too soon (last week).”
