Around Aspen: Boogie’s Bash

MEHWelcoming everyone to Boogie's Bash for the Buddies are Sandy St. John and Lenny "Boogie" Weinglass.

A highlight of every summer is Boogie’s Bash for the Buddies, a fundraiser for the Aspen Buddy Program, that Lenny “Boogie” Weinglass gives at his Merry-Go-Round Ranch on McLain Flats.

Some 20 Aspen restaurants have booths where they serve yummy hors d’ouvres and a fun addition this year was an old-fashioned photo booth. Boogie held the first Bash for the Buddies in 2000, with 200 people attending; this year the crowd grew to 600.

The premise of the Buddy Program is that every child needs a mentor, an adult in his or her life who will spend time with them and participate in a variety of activities such as skiing, hiking, talking and providing encouragement and guidance. During 2008, the Buddy Program managed over 320 pairs of Big Buddies and Little Buddies. Some 64 percent of the Little Buddies come from families that report less than $25,000 in annual income. Some 61 percent of Little Buddies are Latino and members of the staff are bilingual, with fluency in Spanish and English. Buddy dollars funded 90 hours of counseling in 2008.

Undercurrent … In this pleasant summer weather, everyone is enjoying eating outside at many of the local restaurants. And the flowers surrounding the Clark’s Market lunch area are spectacular this year.
