Appalling idea

Aspen Times writer

Dear Editor:This week I saw Tim what’s-his-name on a talk show giving his approval for artificial turf. I know I’m starting to sound like Toni what’s-her-name, but, Tim, make some frickin’ sense. Think, listen to Roger Marolt when he says, “It would be the worst thing ever to happen in Aspen.” If you plastic coat Rio Grande you are going to lose events, not gain them. You can kiss the volleyball tournament goodbye unless you want them to use weighted nets that you have to reset after each spike, then tell everyone they can’t have food and drinks while they’re playing and, meanwhile, the fake turf is absorbing the sun’s heat, making it 20 degrees hotter on the field. Then tell the Ducky Derby kids why they can’t have any rides or games or food or drinks in the park during Ducky Derby. Now go tell the Race for the Cure people they have to stand in the sun or the rain because we couldn’t put up a tent. And while you’re at it, tell the Vietnam Wall supporters we no longer can do spontaneous things like this ’cause we didn’t think before we thought we wanted to be like Vail.Quit disagreeing just to disagree and really try and use your head in a positive way. I haven’t found two people who like the idea, and that includes a broad cross section throughout the city and, as a matter of fact, 90 percent of them are appalled by the idea. Who are you representing, besides yourself?Don DixonAspen
