Another critical flaw

Dear Editor:The debate Wednesday evening points out there is clear agreement on one issue – the vital need for summer and off-season attractions in Snowmass Village. In the past, Snowmass has had more off-season attractions and lost many of them to Aspen. Examples: the dance school, ice skating rink, theater and a food-and-wine festival.Aspen will always be both a critical attraction and a tough business competitor for Snowmass. That fact will not change.A principle of business is that if you have a problem, first priority is to fix the problem before you expand. Otherwise, the business is usually made worse. The current Base Village proposal makes exactly that mistake, with major expansion of winter facilities before dealing with the critical need for impressive non-winter attractions. Good intentions about improving off-season attractions have been stated, but so far, they are minor and not sufficiently outstanding and unique to make Snowmass other than a winter resort. The Base Village proposal offers some minor pluses for summer attractions (which the Skico has stated will be operated only if profitable), but those will be more than offset by the increased capacity in Snowmass and the annoyance of major construction interference for seven to 20 years. The Base Village proposal only worsens two fundamental business problems in Snowmass – extreme seasonality versus capacity and the high cost of business facilities. Conclusion: emphasize, identify and begin implementation of real solutions to our key problem – seasonality – and then expand. Hence, vote “no.”Jim HeywoodSnowmass Village
