Another bridge to repair
Dear Editor:The original iron truss Castle Creek bridge into Aspen was located on Hallam Street to avoid railroad spurs serving the Holden Works in 1890. The existing bridge is somewhat newer, though poorly maintained. One can observe rusty steel girders and missing bolts.Perhaps it’s time Aspen moves beyond the alignment dictated by the railroads of the 1890s.If the city insists on the S-curves, they should find out from CDOT the current sufficiency rating of the bridge, its age and if it can be added to, as some have suggested. If a new bridge needs to be built to accommodate the S-curves alignment, the entrance to Aspen will be Power Plant Road for a couple of years.Ron ThompsonAspen
