Annual Ski for Sisu set at Spring Gulch

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO Colorado

CARBONDALE – Area cross-country skiers are invited to participate in the 20th annual Ski for Sisu skiathlon at Spring Gulch near Carbondale on Sunday.

The event is a key fundraiser for the Spring Gulch Nordic Council, which maintains the free cross-country ski area. It offers three courses – loops of 3.5, 10 and 25 kilometers, but is geared more toward family fun than racing, according to coordinator Greg Fitzpatrick.

Sign-up is at 9:30 a.m., with skiing from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There is no entry fee; participants are urged to obtain pledges for the distance they intend to ski or just make a donation. Anyone who skis 25 kilometers or more receives a free, commemorative T-shirt. In addition, refreshments will be served and a silent auction will take place.

The ski area is located seven miles west of Carbondale on County Road 108. The Norwegian word, “sisu,” by the way, means persistence, endurance and hard work – qualities that helped build the Spring Gulch area, according to Fitzpatrick.
