Andrew, Jackie support affordable housing

Dear Editor:

I write this letter to encourage more public discussion and debate during this election season on the subject of the lack of affordable housing capital reserve plans and capital reserve funds. As our inventory of nearly 1,500 deed-restricted homes begins to age, the need for major capital expenditures to upgrade roofs, siding, windows, foundations, etc., will become an acute financial problem for many in our community.

Andrew Kole, candidate for mayor, and Jackie Kasabach, candidate for City Council, are among six volunteers who comprise the Housing Frontiers Committee. Our committee was organized in August 2008 to provide input and recommendations directly to the housing authority board and staff (APCHA) to improve the ongoing administration of our housing program. Surveys we’ve fielded with housing residents and homeowner associations have revealed a serious lack of planning and funding for major capital requirements in the years ahead.

Andrew and Jackie are both important supporters of a responsible affordable housing program and have consistently contributed their time, energy and ideas to improving it. They understand the need for developing a proactive approach to the problem of our lack of financial resources to deal with our aging housing units. I ask the community to question our candidates for mayor and council on this important subject, and please pay particular attention to the ideas and concepts expressed by Andrew and Jackie.
