An unconscionable act

Dear Editor:I cannot believe that a “man” would shoot a 40-pound baby bear cub and claim “self-defense.” It is tragic when we lose an 18-month-old yearling to traffic as we did last week. It is unconscionable that a bear cub would be shot, especially given the fact that some residents of Lazy Glen have been, well, lazy about complying with regulations concerning bearproofing their neighborhood. What kind of a man is so afraid of a baby bear that he has to shoot it? Has he never heard of hitting a pot and pan together to scare the bear away? I wonder if he even tried this first? If he was so traumatized at the sight of the baby bear cub in his yard, why didn’t he lock himself in his house and call 911? While it is true that we don’t know all the facts yet, it sure sounds like an opportunistic shooting. I wonder if he is a hunter or, better yet, a hunter wannabe? We live in bear country, and the majority of us enjoy seeing the bears and wildlife that occasionally roam our area. Of course, the majority of us also have enough sense to follow county regulations regarding bearproofing, just as the majority of us would never find it necessary to kill a 40-pound bear cub. It is an injustice that the shooter may get off with a ticket and slap on the wrist, if any punishment at all. I would urge the DA to file as severe charges as possible against this heartless individual.Anne GurchickSnowmass
