An oil-shale wasteland

Dear Editor:

The time has come for us to speak our minds about the subject of oil shale. Hundreds of thousands of acres across Colorado, Utah and Wyoming are in possible danger of being leased for development of oil shale. The Bureau of Land Management is currently considering our opinions on the issue and is allowing public comment.

You can submit your comments via the BLM’s website (Google “Oil Shale and Tar Sands Public Comment Form”), but you have to do it by today.

Though some people see the oil shale trapped in the Green River formation as a strong economic asset, the truth is that this might not be the case. Even if it were, would it be worth it? As we all know, outdoor activities are one of the main things that draw people to our area, and tourism is one of our strongest economic assets.

To extract oil from shale, a process that takes a very long time and uses a lot of water and, I might add, will turn large parts of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming into a wasteland. Even if the oil does create jobs, it will destroy not only the land but many jobs in the tourism industry that rely on it.

The original proposition, back in the days of George W. Bush, allocated 2 million acres in the formation to be open for shale commercial development. The Obama administration has amended this, and the new preferred alternative reduces the acreage to 460,000, though if lands are to be destroyed forever, this is still too much.

If you have any opinion on this issue, please comment because time is running out, and this needs to be discussed.
