An inaccurate portrayal

Dear Editor:It is unfortunate that your columnist Paul Andersen (“Friedman’s green world,” July 16) wrote about our house without bothering to call us to check a single fact.To begin with, our home in Maryland, although large, is heated and cooled by an environmentally sustainable geothermal HVAC system. We drilled 10 400-foot “wells” in our backyard, which allow us to take advantage of the ambient underground temperature of 57 degrees to heat and cool our home. The lot on which our house was built was zoned for the development of up to a dozen homes. We bought the entire property precisely to prevent that from happening, built our home on one end and then turned the rest into a green space. We prevented the removal of 300-year-old oak trees and planted over 200 new trees and 70,000 perennials. We have been conscientious guardians of the environment, as the birds, butterflies, deer, foxes and rabbits that now make a home in our yard can attest. As for Mr. Andersen quoting Tom as saying that it was “unfair” of anyone to criticize him, Tom has never said any such thing anywhere and Mr. Andersen has never spoken to him. The quote is a fabrication.Ann FriedmanBethesda, Md./Aspen
