An architect for Semrau

Dear Editor:I am writing to relay our experiences as architects in Aspen. Tim Semrau’s commitment to the housing program, and his understanding of the real issues involved in town planning, has been a constant source of encouragement for us. I highly endorse his candidacy for mayor and sincerely hope that his knowledgeable voice prevails. I know his major concern is for the future of Aspen and for all those who live there. Complex issues require the mixture of understanding and goodwill that is uniquely exhibited in his candidacy.Little Ajax, the project we have recently finished on Shadow Mountain, evolved into an eight-year venture for us. Ultimately, we produced 14 Category 3 and 4 housing units with 41 bedrooms, were able to extend the Midland Trail path beyond our property to the west, and at the same time dedicate an important open-space parcel to the city. The project was incredibly complex and would have been simpler and less risky if we had merely built a few expensive houses. The support we received from Tim Semrau was instrumental in helping us create a project that included open space, a trail extension and category affordable housing instead of free-market housing.Although based in New York, we came here feeling that Aspen was a unique model for issues of both opportunity and need. The highest need in Aspen revolves around the lack of quality affordable housing for all but its wealthiest residents. Aspen’s intelligent housing program, much of it the result of Tim Semrau’s own hard work, has given us an opportunity to utilize our capabilities as architects and builders in helping to solve Aspen’s most pressing issue.Peter GluckNew York
