Alleged shoplifter faces new charges

Naomi HavlenAspen Times Staff Writer

Police say a Kansas woman arrested for shoplifting from an Aspen jewelry store during the Food & Wine Magazine Classic stole items from stores all over town.A search warrant filed in Pitkin County Combined Court on Monday lists 25 items worth more than $1,000 allegedly found in the hotel room of Elizabeth Karr, 44. Karr was arrested and charged with theft on June 16 after allegedly taking several items from Patties Gemagination Jewelers.Police searched Karr’s room after the jewelry store reported some items had been stolen, said detective Jim Crowley, and they found additional property they suspected was stolen. Police sealed the room and Crowley prepared an additional search warrant.According to court documents, the items include two purses from Bloomingbirds, nine items including candles and napkins from Amen Wardy, 10 items including perfumes and lotions from the Cos Bar, and four items from Les Chefs D’Aspen.Crowley said more theft charges will be added to Karr’s current count of theft, a class 4 felony.Karr was allegedly identified by an employee at Patties as being the customer in the store when three rings, two watches and a pair of silver earrings were discovered missing. The employee said Karr, identified by the name on her Food & Wine pass, was seen with her hands inside a display case.Crowley said that although items from several other stores were found in Karr’s hotel room, police only located one of the stolen watches in a bag belonging to Karr. After sealing the room, Crowley said he took Karr to the Limelite Lodge, where he expected her to stay until a warrant was prepared for her arrest. However, police later discovered her on Sunday, June 16, trying to board a United Airlines flight to Kansas.Karr was transported to the Pitkin County Jail and posted $5,000 bond after making a first appearance in district court with her attorney, Margaret Porter.[Naomi Havlen’s e-mail address is nhavlen@aspentimes.com.]
