Alleged kidnapping under investigation

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN ” Aspen police are continuing to investigate an alleged kidnapping over the weekend.

A French man, between 40 and 50 years old, said he was kidnapped, robbed of $400, tied up and left in an abandoned Jeep on a rural road near Carbondale during the early-morning hours Saturday.

The accuser, however, provided scant details, describing the alleged kidnappers as three “Hispanic males” he’d met at Club Chelsea and the vehicle as a four-seater, according to Aspen police.

The French man, who flew out of Aspen as scheduled on Monday, admitted he had consumed about five whiskey drinks and didn’t remember much of the incident beyond a ride home gone wrong and wriggling out of a seat belt he said the thieves used to bound him.

“His memory is spotty,” said Aspen Sgt. Mike Tracey, who is investigating the case.

While the man’s story is sensational, Tracey said there have been no inconsistencies and that the man had no real reason to make it up.

There were no witnesses at Club Chelsea, Tracey said, and no leads from Carbondale, mostly because the incident began “innocently” as a ride home shortly after the bar closed.

Tracey said the man reported that his alleged kidnappers each carried something “shiny,” but could not confirm that the men were armed with knives.
