All praise the power of pow

While at various Comedy Fest events last week, I spoke with a few people who complained about the dreadful weather. It was, for many, the week of hellishness as they braved extreme cold and a steady blizzard. I had a hard time mustering empathy when people complained about flights and lost baggage. This was the storm of dreams. For the locals who waited in line at the gondola and who were still skiing absurd amounts of powder in secret stashes Saturday and Sunday, this was the week we’ve been waiting for. When folks at the Comedy Fest talked about how bad weather was, I could only laugh. For me, the weather was as good as it could possibly be. The inches were adding up in my mind like I was an inside trader adding up the dollars from a bullish day on Wall Street. The whole week was perfect. Everywhere I went, from Wednesday through Saturday, the skiing was incredible. There’s always something a little peculiar when a group of people come to town for a reason completely removed from the weather. Aspen is so focused on the outdoors that sometimes, while living here, it’s hard to remember much else exists. So Comedy Fest mixes the best of both worlds. We get the jokes and the feel of a big city for a weekend while the slopes stay relatively empty. We can only hope too many people don’t catch [on?] for their next visit. But judging on [by?] the complaints, I think most powderhounds can rest easy.
