Airport to have Internet for travelers wanting to surf

Aspen Times staff report

Internet connections will soon be available to travelers at the Aspen Pitkin County Airport.

The service is being offered in response to numerous requests by airport users. The service, which will allow Web browsing and e-mail connections, will be provided by Sopris Web Solutions, a Carbondale Web design partnership.

Initially, two computer work stations will be placed in the waiting area of the lobby and two more in the departure lounge beyond the security screening area. Connections for personal laptop computers will also be available. The equipment will be activated by credit card-reading devices.

“The main purpose is to provide convenience for the customers,” said Airport Director Peter Van Pelt. Proceeds will go to the service provider, and the airport will take a nominal percentage of gross receipts for space rental, Van Pelt said.

A lease is now being negotiated, and the service is expected to be available some time in February.

Malcolm McMichael of Sopris Web Solutions said the goal is to have the service up and running by Presidents’ Day weekend.

As in the county’s recent decision to operate the airport restaurant, Van Pelt said, the purpose is not to make money, but to provide a good overall product to the traveling public.

Initially, Internet access and e-mail will be the only service available, McMichael said, but more services may be offered if demand exists.
