Airport expansion needs more scrutiny

Dear Editor:

As I recall, there was relatively little concern raised during the approval process about the size and look of the new Aspen hospital currently under construction. Where once the Prince of Peace chapel set the scale for the neighborhood, now an immense, inappropriate box overshadows everything around it. Improvements to the existing hospital were certainly necessary, but we deserve better.

I hope the proposed airport expansion gets a much harder look. What is the minimum that the existing airport needs to expand so as to effectively and comfortably meet present demand but no more? A 50 percent increase in size seems a bit excessive. What do the emplanement numbers over the past decade tell us about future needs? Should the desires of private airplane owners be allowed to overwhelm the scale of the existing neighborhood even if general aviation provides a source of income?

How can valleywide transportation be improved to serve those using both the Aspen and Eagle airports because the weather is sometimes better in Eagle? Most importantly, in the future, how can our airport best reflect the goals and values of this community?

Does doubling the size of the airport, building massive hangars, and providing for many more cars embody that vision?
