AHS girls off to 1-0 league start

Aspen Times Staff Report

Aspen, the No. 9-ranked Class 3A girls basketball team in Colorado, proved its merit Saturday night with a comfortable 62-44 win over league opponent Rangely.

Aspen, now 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the Class 3A Western Slope League, got off to a 26-2 lead through the first quarter.

“We played extremely well, playing our best quarter both offensively and defensively,” said Aspen coach Lance Finkbeiner. “After that it was pretty even but we managed to keep that lead throughout.”

Aspen sophomore Lizzie Suiter led the Skiers in scoring with 17 points, followed by senior Cory Reno with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Once again, Aspen point guard Ellen Falender recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 assists. Lacee Patterson added 12 points for the Skiers and Zara Podolak netted 8 points.

“We had balanced scoring once again, which is always a good thing,” Finkbeiner said, “and we had some of our best moments of the season. We still have work to do – to try and stay consistent throughout the game – but I’m pleased with where we’re at at this point in the season.”

Aspen hosts two league opponents this weekend at the AHS Skier Dome. On Friday, Aspen plays Paonia at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, Aspen takes on Eagle Valley at 4 p.m.

“We’ve already beaten both teams in non-league games earlier this season, so we’ve got a good chance to start off our league season with some wins,” Finkbeiner said.
