After-hours clinic a welcome arrival

Midvalley residents no longer will have to make the trek to the hospital emergency rooms in Aspen or Glenwood Springs when in need of non-prime-time care.

On Monday, an after-hours medical care clinic will open in the Aspen-Basalt Health Care Center, located at 234 Cody Lane in Basalt.

This is welcome news to a broad range of midvalley residents who had been forced to either head to the emergency room or put off medical care until their doctor’s office opened ” not always a practical set of options.

It stands to reason that the clinic, which will be open from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sundays, won’t replace anyone’s personal physician. And, it remains to be seen whether the costs of care at this clinic will put it out of reach for lower-income folks, which all too often is the case with specialized clinics.

Even so, the after-hours clinic is an idea whose time has finally come for a portion of the valley in need of its own after-hours facility.

It’s also worth applauding the driving forces behind the creation of the new clinic ” Aspen Valley Hospital and the Aspen Valley Medical Foundation.

Like most local economic sectors, nonprofits are hurt by the ongoing national recession. But Aspen Valley Medical Foundation has managed to weather the storm intact enough to honor its commitment to serve the growing health and human-service needs of valleywide communities.
