Africa rocks in Aspen
Dear Editor:This summer and fall the lineup of African musicians brought to the valley is one of a kind.Angélique Kidjo was brought by Jazz Aspen/Snowmass. Belly Up is doing a bang-up job of bringing great African music to the local scene, with Femi Kuti, Hugh Masakela and Vusi Mahlasela coming. And having brought Habib Koite with the Aspen Writers’ Foundation, we will have seen music that is the best of the continent of Africa. The Wheeler is bringing the new Tuareg sensation Tinariwen, along with the Aly Farka Toure’s son Vieux Farka Toure, to a superb night at the opera house. This will be a summer and fall of the outstanding music of Benin, Mali, Nigeria and South Africa. Musically the pot of African music has been stirred, and the aroma will be fantastic.Andy HansonAspen
