Africa needn’t be forgotten

Dear Editor:This year marks an anniversary of the Holocaust in Europe 60 years ago. It will be the 10th anniversary of the genocide of Rwanda as well. And slaughter continues in Sudan and the Congo. Meanwhile as Americans we are concerned with the effects of the recent Indian Ocean tsunami. All these developments disturb me. But it is the overconcern with the tsunami and the underconcern with events in Africa. Ten years ago while a Democrat was in the White House nothing was done to help the people of Rwanda. Today with a Republican in power we are acting in the same fashion. What is it going to take to get some focus on the problems of Africa?Robert Kennedy said it best this week: “We are the best entertained people in the world, and the least informed.” I would like to suggest that at least in Aspen we can be more informed. Online you can watch Africa through the BBC and other foreign press outlets. On TV you can channel surf and find some news, but you really need to look. Or locally you can stop by the Wildize Store at Highlands on weekends and I can suggest many ways to be better informed. You see we must do this because Africa is disappearing before our eyes. Go see Hotel Rwanda and you will see what I mean. Or follow developments in the Darfur region of Sudan. We really are not in a cocoon here in America, and there really are people who do care about the world. Get involved, or come see me if you do not know how. The Wildize store is open 12 to 6 p.m. every day.Andy HansonAspen
