Aerosol arson suspects under investigation

Police have identified as many as four juveniles believed to be involved in lighting a number of fires around town last weekend. The case, which is still under investigation, was solved through a combination of evidence and tips from the community, said Sgt. Steve Smith from the Aspen Police Department. All four suspects are teens under the age of 18, Smith said. “The parents and kids are all in the loop, but we still have more to investigate,” he said. The fires were first set near the Limelite Lodge in Aspen on the night of Saturday Sept. 30, and continued over the next two or so days, Smith said. All involved the use of aerosol spray cans and paper. None resulted in major property damage.”We discovered a few more fires and developed some solid leads and suspects,” Smith said.No fires have been set since the first suspects were identified. The continuing investigation involves follow-up interviews and possibly rounding up more suspects.Smith said the evidence gathered so far has been forwarded to the district attorney’s office for review and possible charges. If any of the children involved are charged, they will most likely face a judge in a family court, where juveniles typically are processed for such offenses.
