The Aspen Writers’ Foundation’s Aspen Summer Words Literary Festival opens Saturday and runs through Wednesday. The event includes readings, talks, publishing industry panels, professional consultations with agents and editors, and social gatherings. The festival is complemented by a daily writing retreat in the morning.

Ann Patchett will give a reading and talk, “Writing Things You Know Nothing About,” on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Paepcke Auditorium. Others scheduled to give talks include Pam Houston, Amy Bloom, Laura Fraser, Ron Carlson, Christopher Merrill, James Houston and Pat Schroeder, former U.S. representative from Colorado.
