A writer’s world

Dear Editor:

On Thursday, Feb. 25, author Pam Houston shared excerpts from her new book with students at Aspen High School and inspired students grades 9-12 to foster their literary creativity.

Pam was at the school courtesy of the Aspen Education Foundation as well as Allison and Art Daily. She read several short chapters from her soon to be published book, “Contents May Have Shifted,” which is a book of 144 short stories, ranging from one to three pages, each titled with a different place.

She read students stories titled Lubbock, Texas, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She told students that most of her writing is based on events from her own life, because she is not a person who is good at imagining new worlds. Rather, she told students, her niche is that she understands people and the exchanges that take place between them.

After reading the short stories, she asked students to think of several events that have recently occurred in their own lives, and elaborate upon one in the form of a short story. Students then shared their stories with Pam and the rest of the students in the class, and Pam critiqued the stories and gave students other interesting ideas to consider when writing in the future. Pam showed AHS students that writing could be a funny, stimulating exercise that is good for both body and mind.
