A wise decision

Dear Editor:

I want to compliment the U.S. Forest Service on its enlightened handling of the selection of Scott Snelson to be our new Aspen-Sopris District ranger. As part of his selection process, White River National Forest Supervisor Scott Fitzwilliams invited a wide range of environmental and community representatives to interview and offer comments on the three finalists for the position.

By seeking community input during the decision making process, the Forest Service gathered valuable insight from the community, while it also ensured that the new district ranger would learn a great deal about local valley concerns and perspectives before he even steps into his new job.

This is exactly how important public decisions should be made, and I commend Scott Fitzwilliams for his skillful handling of the process and his commitment to community-building.
