A wise approach to housing solutions
Dear Editor:As president of Habitat for Humanity here in the Roaring Fork Valley, I want to commend the planning and zoning board in Basalt for their hard work in coming to grips with the new Master Plan for Basalt. Further, I want to applaud their carefully considered recommendation to keep the door open for a solution that could involve a logical extension of the UGB that would enable the relocation of the families living in the flood plain. It is certainly a tough challenge to decide how to manage the growth of the town, but it sure feels like there will be viable solutions available by building in some reasonable, planned flexibility to resolve a 10-year-old problem. We at Habitat know full well how hard it is to find land for affordable housing. We are supportive of this wise approach, and on behalf or our board, we encourage the Town Council to fully support your approved plan. This will provide a means to find reasonable replacement housing for the trailer park tenants of the Roaring Fork and Pan and Fork Mobile Home Parks and will preserve needed affordable housing units in the valley. In closing, I want to thank the P&Z for their efforts on behalf of the community.Scott GilbertPresident of the board,Habitat for Humanity of the Roaring Fork Valley
