A Week in the Life … of Aspen Junior Hockey
Aspen Junior Hockey has been hosting 83 teams from five different states since Oct. 14 for the 23rd annual Fall Faceoff. The Aspen Leafs competed the first weekend in the Bantam A and Peewee A divisions. This weekend features 31 teams playing in the Bantam B, Peewee B and Squirt B divisions, with Aspen teams in all three. The final weekend of the tournament (Oct. 28 to 30), Aspen Junior Hockey is hosting 22 teams in three divisions: Midget 18UA, Midget 16UAA and Squirt C.
But Aspen Junior Hockey’s reach goes far beyond this tournament. The local nonprofit provides hockey and skating development for boys and girls ages 4 to 20 and will be implementing an innovative new plan with the help of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association by bringing Finland’s top youth hockey coach and director, Kalle Valiaho, to Aspen. Aspen Junior Hockey Executive Director Shaun Hathaway says, “We’re really going to be able to bring our program to a level not seen anywhere in the country.”
We check out the action — on and off the ice — in this installment of A Week in the Life.
The Aspen City Council directed staff to move forward with the Burlingame early childhood education center, but decided it needs more information on the affordable housing units that are part of the schematic design at a work session Monday.
