A war on ourselves

Dear Editor:

This letter is in response to Kim Vieira , Etna Tauschner and all the other cheerleaders for the war on drugs. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it, the saying goes. Apparently both these pundits of purity missed the lesson on the failure of prohibition.

Because drugs are illegal, a black market is created which makes production very profitable. The tremendous profits drive the violence we see along the Mexican border where 40,000 people have been murdered since that country escalated its drug war five years ago.

Instead of treatment centers we build ever-more prisons to deal with a medical addiction problem. Our war on drugs has been an abysmal failure yet harpies like Kim and Etna sing the praises of a war we wage on ourselves.

I think the next time they feel the urge to get up on their sanctimonious soap boxes, they should remember to take credit for killing all those casualties in their war on drugs. Because it’s idiots like them who are responsible for the continuation of this national travesty.
