A true commitment to education

Dear Editor:On behalf of everyone at Aspen High School, I would like to publicly thank the Aspen Institute for its generous support of our students. Last weekend, the institute provided scholarships for AHS students Karlie Zajak, Bernardo Ruiz and Jonathan Olson to attend their exciting Teen Socrates program. During this gathering, the students worked with a moderator to discuss many issues related to religious conflict, tolerance and theory. Thank you to Katie Fitzgerald for her great work with our kids.Recently, the Aspen Institute also announced that they would sponsor a luncheon speaker series at our school. On Wednesday, Pulitzer Prize winning author Martin Sherwin spoke to a standing room only crowd of 150 students during the first installment of our “Speak to the Future Series.” The students were captivated by Professor Sherwin’s personal stories and anecdotes about his research on the history of the Cold War. I want to particularly thank Cristal Logan for bringing this series to life. We applaud the Aspen Institute’s commitment to our valley, to education and to our future leaders, and look forward to participating in many more of their outstanding events.Brad Batesassistant principalAspen High School
