A tremendous community effort

Dear Editor:

LIFT-UP would like to thank our caring community for its strong show of support during the holidays on behalf of local families in need. With the help of many individuals, businesses, organizations and churches, LIFT-UP was able to brighten the season with more than 2,500 holiday meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and provide Angel Tree gifts for 3,619 area children. It has been a tremendous community effort. Our year-round and seasonal volunteers did an outstanding job organizing and distributing all the food and gifts, and kept the holiday spirit shining throughout the hustle and bustle.

These holiday programs are conducted over and above LIFT-UP’s day-to-day services from our five area offices and food pantries. As the troubled economy took its toll on our region during the last quarter of 2008, requests for assistance have increased nearly 40 percent. We have only been able to respond to these needs with the help of so many generous people in our area. There are far too many people, companies and groups to list here (there were 50 Angel Tree locations alone this year!), but we trust that you know who you are, and we want you to know how much we appreciate all that you have done. The holidays are a very busy time for most people, so it’s noteworthy that so many have given of their time, energy and resources to help those experiencing hardship during these difficult economic times.

That LIFT-UP has been able to keep up with the growing needs in recent months, while also providing special holiday assistance, says more about our community than it does about LIFT-UP. LIFT-UP is really an extension of your concern for others, and we thank you for your confidence in us to serve as a reliable channel of assistance for the past 26 years. The numerous food drives, special events and store promotions to benefit LIFT-UP helped us keep the food pantries stocked and prepared to meet the needs of hungry families. And the generous financial support from many helped us finish 2008 on firm footing, ready to continue our vital services in this uncertain new year.

We wish to extend a special word of thanks to Colorado Mountain News Media for assisting LIFT-UP in communicating the needs to the public through our local newspapers, and informing people of ways they can help. The public’s response and participation has been remarkable. We thank you all on behalf of those who cannot thank you themselves ” the thousands of men, women and children who have had food to eat during the holidays and throughout the year.
