A successful nordic festival

Dear Editor:On behalf of the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Clubs nordic team, I would like to thank the Aspen Elks for their generous support and underwriting of our recent Aspen Nordic Festival. The Nordic Festival brings together cross-country skiers of all ages and abilities, ranging from 7-year-old beginners through an elite field of top national and international racers. It truly is a unique event that combines elite level racing, junior nationals qualifying, drag race sprints in Wagner Park, childrens events with activities such as soccer on skis and nordic ski jumping, the Bappa Tour (a citizens tour from Snowmass to Aspen) and the famed Owl Creek Chase, hosted by the Ute Mountaineer and the city of Aspen. As Bob Wade of the Ute Mountaineer mentioned in a previous letter, the Aspen Nordic Festival is a community event and would not be possible without the help of many organizations and individuals. In addition to the Aspen Elks, AVSC also would like to thank the Pitkin County Sheriffs Office, the City of Aspen Parks and Recreation Department (especially the grooming crew of Austin Weiss, Eric Gosney and Tom Stiles), the Ute Mountaineer, Rocky Mountain Nordic and all the AVSC parents and volunteers that helped make the festival a success.I have received many positive comments from racers, coaches and parents from communities like Steamboat, Vail, Boulder, Summit Country, Durango and more. Across the board, everyone was impressed with the quality of the events and the professionalism of the volunteers and staff. Thanks to everyone involved, the Aspen Nordic Festival is an event Aspen can be proud of. John Callahannordic program directorAspen Valley Ski & Snowboard ClubNeighborhood
