A strange love

Just like last year, and the year before that, and the year before that, you spent Valentine’s Day with your beloved. And what a glorious day it was, with blue skies beckoning overhead and the warm Colorado sun beaming down on some 15 new inches of snow.Love was definitely in the air. You’re beginning to wonder, though: When, if ever, will your devotion to the mountains and heavenly powder turns be superseded by your love for a member of the opposite sex? You’ve dated plenty, but you’ve never been as attached to any of them as much as your favorite snowboards.Your former high school sweetheart. The state beauty queen. The Hollywood starlet (who happens to be presenting at the Oscars this week). That beautiful French girl you spontaneously kissed in the middle of a crowded bar in Paris, then kissed good-bye when the semester was over. Your former housemates and former workmates – not to mention about half of your sister’s friends. All of them were the object of your affection at one point, but for some reason, none of them stuck. Maybe you’re just not cut out for long-term commitments. Maybe, even more plausible, you’ve missed meeting the perfect girl because you’ve been too fixated on finding the perfect line, the unmatched powder day, that flawless winter. You could argue that Wednesday was about as close to perfection as it gets. Then again, your love remains unrequited. Instead of someone to wake up next to each morning, you often find yourself yearning to wake up to more mornings just like Wednesday.Undeniably, some people might think that’s a little strange. Then again, you could argue they don’t really know what true love is.
