A shift in values?

Dear Editor:

My wife and I have been coming to Aspen for the past five years. We are Australian Baby Boomers and grew up in an era where our parents lived by and insisted upon honesty and integrity.

On Friday we were having lunch on Aspen Mountain and found a leather pouch containing a credit card, $100 and a two phone numbers. We advised the restaurant that we would take it to lost-and-found at the base of the Gondola. When we delivered it, the supervisor spent a good 15 minutes trying to find the person through the electronic data in her computer. By the time we returned to our hotel we had a message from the supervisor stating the owner had come in and recovered her wallet and would call us. We never heard from the owner.

A day later my wife was in a store trying on a jacket. When she returned the jacket to the sales assistant she realized she had left her only and expensive pair of sunglasses in the change room. As the rooms are locked she asked the sales assistant to go back with her to recover the glasses. The room was now occupied so they waited until a young girl emerged before checking the room. The glasses were gone so my wife asked the girl if she had found the glasses but she sheepishly denied seeing them. Questioning the sales assistant my wife was told there was nothing that could be done. Missing from a locked room seems like stolen to us.

The last two days have left us wondering if values have changed.
