A rosy tribute

Herewith a little tribute in verse (or worse) to my favorite Brooklyn Aspenite, May Rose Salkin, who after 30 years, is no longer able to brighten our summer days:

“Rose is a Rose

Is a Rose

Is a Rose

Dear, delightful,

Merry May Rose,

Who never stepped

On anyone’s toes:

The wonders of Aspen

Were her delight,

From rivers to mountains

And eagles in flight.

She reveled and rhymed

With poetic glee,

of grits, dandelions

And the sting of a bee.

Her sweet little ditties

Made people smile,

Unaffected, ingenuous,

Her style could beguile.

Most folks applauded

Her diverting games,

But some smart alecks

Called her names.

Iambic pentameter

Was not her forte,

But lines that brought giggles

Were her favorite sport.

With her Raggedy Ann dolls

Back to Brooklyn she flew,

But promised to send

A billet-doux PDQ.

Because no one can emulate

Her eloquent pauses,

How can we carry on

Her witty word causes?!
