A river lost

I have lost the river.Monday I drove into Aspen on the new upper lane of Highway 82 through Snowmass Canyon for the first time. For two years, as I was driving upvalley in the downvalley lane, slowly, during rush hour, I felt as if I was riding the water upstream. I had been given a gift by being able to watch the river sparkle with the morning sun, rise and fall with the seasons, freeze and melt, carry kayaks, feed fishermen’s souls and occasionally catch a glimpse of an eagle. I knew, when this high-sided and very tall road opened it would take me away from the river. Now, on the way up to Aspen you can only see the river once, and only if you dangerously glance back near the last curve before you leave the canyon. I feel sorry for all the new people to the valley who will never see what we commuters have been blessed to see. We all will miss the views of this marvelous river just to go a bit faster.I don’t know what they plan for the downvalley lanes, but I can only assume more high concrete barriers that only the drivers in big trucks can see over. I only wish they could put up metal barriers that are just as efficient and wouldn’t obstruct the views of the river. Then we all would be able to enjoy the sights of the river that have made this valley as spectacular and famous as it is.Andrea A. Arms Basalt
