A rewarding invitational

Dear Editor:

On Nov. 30 to Dec. 1, the Aspen Skating Club hosted the Aspen Invitational, the first ever figure skating competition in Aspen at the Aspen Recreation Center and Lewis Ice Arena.

The event brought skaters from all over the state of Colorado to compete with local skaters at levels ranging from beginner to pre-preliminary and included an artistic category for all level skaters.

We would like to thank the following individuals and businesses for their assistance in hosting this event.

Event chairs: Lise Bodek and Barbara Shechter; Teri Hooper: Aspen Skating Club head coach; the Aspen Skating Club board, parents and club members who worked many hours to put on a world class event; Jenny Nelson and the city of Aspen; Warren Klug, Sharon Tennis and the Aspen Square; Craig Melville and the Mountain Chalet; Karlyn and Mark Stout and Snowmass Lodging Company; Anne Anderson; Graham and Bunz Restaurant; and Alex Hunter.

Most rewarding were the continuous compliments we heard in regard to the organization of the event and the excellence and comfort of the facility. The competition judges and officials gave their highest accolades and vowed to encourage coaches and competitors to come back to future Aspen skating events, and to encourage other clubs to attend. This was a wonderful experience for newcomers to the Aspen area and locals alike.

Again, thank you to the SPARC board and residents of Aspen for the vision to have created this level of quality in our ice facilities, with Lewis Ice Arena and the Aspen Ice Garden. We are very fortunate as skaters and look forward to sharing them with the regional figure skating community again next year!
