A quilt with a big purpose
Dear Editor:Following is the story of a special quilt for a formidable purpose. My mother, an avid quilter, routinely made quilts for friends to wrap them in love. Everyone wanted a “Cheryl Quilt.” My mother passed away a year ago in October at the age of 57, leaving a legacy of unfinished quilts scattered throughout her home. She also had breast cancer.I brought 12 quilts back to Colorado from her Charleston, S.C., home. My friend Wendy Glassier helped me finish these prized possessions over the past year. Several were given away to intended recipients, and a few remain tucked away in my closet with memories of Mom.We have now finished the very last quilt, which is much larger and seems to speak to me of a greater purpose than the other works of love. As we finished the details of the oversized Queen/King quilt, I decided it should be used to raise money to help the American Cancer Society and all those struggling with cancer. From Wednesday, Nov. 22 through Thursday, Dec. 21, this very special quilt that my mother started and Wendy and I finished will be on display at the Pour House and Village Smithy in Carbondale. For a minimum $10 donation to the American Cancer Society, you can enter your name for a chance to win this beautiful quilt (multiple entries are allowed).Checks should be made out to the American Cancer Society and can be entered at either restaurant or sent to me directly at 5000 Bear Ridge Road, Basalt 81621. Credit card donations can be accepted online at http://www.RoaringForkRelay.com. The drawing will take place at the Pour House on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 6:30 p.m. If you live out of town and you win, I will mail the quilt to you prior to Christmas. Feel free to contact me at 948-6350 if you have any questions about this project.I know it would please my mother that one of her handmade treasures is being used for such a wonderful cause. Please sponsor this worthy organization and good luck!Julia SpencerBasalt
