A postal glare

Dear Editor: As a recent visitor to God’s lovely Roaring Fork Valley, I was extremely pleased to enjoy the solitude, peace and quiet, especially during the evenings and nights. The tranquility was indescribable and the unobstructed view of the sky and stars was tremendously pleasurable. The only drawback was when I was leaving Basalt after dinner in that quaint and picturesque town. The relatively new U.S. Post Office building there was surrounded by a barrage of lights that was so bright, it completely destroyed the darkness and view of the sky and stars. It seems to be out of character with what the valley is all about and I would think it would be a hindrance to those who live in that vicinity who wish to enjoy the beauty of a star-filled sky on a crisp dark Colorado night. It would seem to me that the candle power of those lights surrounding that post office could be greatly reduced, still provide adequate security and yet allow those residents of the valley the opportunity to enjoy the night sky, not to mention the many tourists who travel to your valley to enjoy just such scenery. You might pass my concern to the U.S. Postal Service to see if they could be more respectful of the beauty of your Colorado night sky by shrinking back on the lights on their Basalt U.S. Post Office building.
