A penny for open space

Dear Editor:On behalf of the Roaring Fork Conservancy, we strongly encourage voters to vote yes on the Basalt sales tax proposal question 2A. The ballot would authorize the Town Council to spend the funds on purchases of open space, trails and park projects. For one additional sales tax penny, Basaltines can help to acquire more open space. In 2001, an overwhelming majority of voters approved the 2E ballot initiative to create an open space program in Basalt. Since that time, Basalt has purchased several magnificent open spaces, including the Confluence Parcel and the award-winning Old Pond Park. One extra cent on your morning coffee or sandwich at lunch will turn into $1 million in purchasing power for open space. This will allow the town to purchase new properties and continue to maintain and protect the magnificent open spaces, parks and trails already in place. Basalt is a river town and lies at the confluence of two of the greatest rivers in Colorado. As your watershed conservation organization, we feel open space purchases along the river corridor will help to preserve the natural integrity of our great rivers and ensure that future generations will enjoy a healthier watershed.Rick LofaroExecutive directorRoaring Fork Conservancy
