A new social space

(This letter was originally addressed to the Aspen City Council.)Dear Editor:I am writing in support of Junee Kirk and her efforts to transform the old youth center to allow for more community events and dances. I see the potential for this space, to not only serve the existing dance community, but to expand the opportunity for learning, dancing and socializing to the entire community as a whole. It is an opportunity to create a space where all ages can gather, be it together, or for individual groups like seniors, teens, singles, etc. Given we have an amazing town with tons of bars, restaurants and dance clubs, we have many social outlets, however, a space like this could provide social activities that do not revolve around alcohol as much of the rest of our resort town seems to. Maybe it is a space for a “first night” dance on New Year’s Eve for the community or for our teens. I enjoy après, and I enjoy shows at the Belly Up, but the addition of a new community social space like this, within town, in my mind would be very valuable.Jennifer M. Doleck-SmithAspen
