A new recruitment plan

Dear Editor:I wasn’t at the basketball game between Roaring Fork and Basalt, but I know bad sportsmanship when I read about it in the newspaper. Apparently, there are more officials from Carbondale than Basalt, and this causes a perceived bias in the eyes of Basalt boosters. I won’t get into the messages the adults are unwittingly sending to the impressionable teenagers, because other letter writers have done a good job with that sad topic. My suggestion is for Basalt supporters to insert a whistle into the same body cavity from where their complaints emit. Someone from the BHS community should be in the gym at the next home game, armed with a supply of pamphlets with information on how and where to become a certified referee. Each time an adult vocalizes a criticism of an official’s decision, the volunteer could approach politely and say something like, “I noticed you seem to have a good grasp of basketball rules. We’re recruiting new officials and would love to have you on our roster! Here’s the information you need, please consider becoming a ref. Thank you.”The booster club could pitch in for travel expenses to the certification clinic and registration fees. If this fails to attract new officials from the Basalt community, the fans could always try cheering for their team in a more positive way, but that may be asking too much.
