A meeting worth watching

Steve Kaufman

At the conclusion of the last Aspen School Board meeting, Jon Siegal, the new school board president, stated that this had been one of the most meaningful school board meetings in his six years as a board member.

K-12 mathematics had been the subject of a two-hour presentation by teachers from the elementary, middle and high schools. Diana Sirko, the new district superintendent, concluded the meeting with a commanding summary and analysis of the information.

She then presented a forward-looking vision of how the math departments would use the accumulated data to improve math education in the district. The audience of teachers, administrators, board members and the public demonstrated their approval with a round of admiring applause.

What happened at this school board meeting is of importance to everyone who is impacted by the success of our schools in serving our valley’s students. The dedication, passion and abilities of a group of people determined to make a positive impact on the lives of the children entrusted to them was something to see, and you can.
