A hearty chuckle

The front page of the Dec. 5 edition of the Aspen Daily News featured an article headed, “Snowmass Village marketing tax to dwarf Aspen’s.” I read it and would like to translate some of the comments quoted therein.

Comment from David Perry, Aspen Skiing Co. Vice President: “We think it was a very good move for Snowmass voters to approve the tax.” (The tax to provide $2.5 million for marketing the resort.)

Translation: “The approval of the tax relieves the Skico of any need to increase our own contribution to the marketing effort. What a relief to have Snowmass residents and visitors spend their own hard-earned cash to help out our private business interests so generously.”

Comment from Bobbie Burkley, the Skico’s strategic development director: “It would be very efficient to consolidate our efforts.” (The efforts of the Skico and those of the new Snowmass marketing initiative.)

Translation: “We’re very happy to have Snowmass bankroll more marketing. However, we have very little confidence in its marketing expertise so we have to have some say on how it’s to be done.”

All I get out of this is a hearty chuckle.
