A ‘happy meal,’ please

Aspen Times writer

Dear Editor:The politics of fear entered the campaign last week as the White House answered the Democratic Convention rally by pushing the “orange alert” panic button. Plots revealed by Pakistanis may be credible. Likewise, Bush may be ousted by voters wary of a one-dimensional second act.Bush wins over Kerry in a game of “hunt the terrorist down sport.” Even so, the ploy to utilize fear as a campaign stimulant reflects poorly on a president who has cast all the pearls of his wisdom into a single pond, barely making a ripple. A retired director of the International Trade Commission said one day after 9/11 that the terrorist goal was to shift American resources toward military expenditure for the purpose of fomenting a sort of cultural bankruptcy. Unlike the U.S. political attention span, which occurs in four-year cycles, al-Qaida is targeting the next generation of illiterate youth whose minds are being ransomed to buy laser guidance systems and drill bits for Halliburton. This elusive enemy cannot be bombed into submission or sent to some reservation in Arizona. A multifaceted effort requires someone more deft than a smirky Texan with a six-gun. Truly, someone has to figure out how to send the next generation of disenfranchised fundamentalists a “happy meal” along with the military ordnance.Bruce MunroeNew Castle
